Broadcasting Bill approved as House of Representatives initiative
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The draft law on the Third Amendment to Law Number 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting has been approved as a DPR RI initiative bill and will be deliberated further together with the government.
The approval was led by Deputy Speaker of the House Sufmi Dasco Ahmad during a plenary session of the DPR RI in Jakarta on Tuesday, after eight political party factions delivered their views in writing.
“We ask this honourable session: can the initiative bill of Commission I of the DPR on the Third Amendment to Law Number 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting be approved as a DPR RI initiative bill?” said Dasco, which was subsequently approved by the legislators.
One of the regulatory updates contained in the Broadcasting Bill is an increase in the number of commissioners of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) from nine to eleven.
Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the DPR Dave Laksono explained that the increase in the number of commissioners is intended to accommodate the representation of various interests within the KPI.
“The consideration is seven people as representatives from the DPR, one from the government, one from the public, one from broadcasting institutions, and one from academics,” said Dave during a harmonisation meeting on the Broadcasting Bill in Jakarta on Monday (24/8).
In addition, the Broadcasting Bill also regulates provisions concerning over-the-top (OTT) digital media platforms. This regulation is intended to provide legal certainty and equal responsibility within a continuously evolving media ecosystem.
“The spirit is not to expand restrictions on OTT, but to ensure clear, fair, and proportionate governance amid changes in the media ecosystem,” said Dave when contacted by ANTARA on Thursday (20/8).
