British Warship HMS Tamar Visits Jakarta
The British Royal Navy vessel, HMS Tamar, arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on Wednesday (17/6) local time. The warship’s visit marks the increasingly close strategic partnership between Indonesia and the United Kingdom, particularly in the defence and security sector. The visit underscores the UK’s long-term commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, as well as its role as a trusted partner in supporting regional stability, maritime security, and international cooperation. This was conveyed by the British Embassy in Jakarta in a press statement received by detikcom on Wednesday (17/6/2026). During its time in Jakarta waters, HMS Tamar and its crew will participate in various activities and cultural exchanges with the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL). One of the activities will be a friendly football match, reflecting the close relationship between the two navies. In addition to defence cooperation, the visit is also filled with various public diplomacy activities aimed at strengthening ties with the community and encouraging cultural exchange. A number of media representatives and children from Jakarta’s coastal communities had the opportunity to visit HMS Tamar to learn more about the life of Royal Navy sailors. “HMS Tamar’s visit to Jakarta demonstrates the UK’s continued commitment to working with Indonesia as a trusted partner in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” said British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey. “Through professional cooperation and engagement with the community, we continue to strengthen relations that go beyond defence and security, while building lasting friendships between the two countries. Diplomacy, Collaboration, Achievement!” he exclaimed. The crew of HMS Tamar will also participate in culinary diplomacy activities by tasting various typical Jakarta dishes, in order to help enliven the 499th Anniversary of Jakarta City. “I am very pleased to bring HMS Tamar and her entire crew to Jakarta. This visit is not just a ship’s port call, but also an opportunity to build closer relationships, understand each other’s cultures, and further strengthen the partnership between the UK and Indonesia,” said Commander of HMS Tamar, Commander TS Lindsey. “Thank you for the warm welcome, and we hope to continue strengthening relations with Indonesia,” he said.
