British Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns
Sir Keir Starmer has resigned from his position as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and as leader of the Labour Party. Starmer confirmed he had spoken with the King and noted there would be a contest to replace him within the Labour Party leadership. The new party leader will take office before Parliament reconvenes in September. In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister said his party had internally questioned whether he was the best person to lead them into the next general election. “I have heard the answer,” Starmer said. Starmer stressed that every decision he made during his tenure was about putting the country first. Appearing emotional upon his resignation, the Prime Minister thanked his wife, whom he described as a pillar of support. “I want to be the best father I can be to my beautiful children.” Sir Keir Starmer took office in July 2024 following a landslide general election victory. Since then, he has witnessed a massive decline in the government’s popularity amid growing dissatisfaction with his leadership.
