In Yogyakarta, the UK-Indonesia Strategic Partnership has shown tangible results. Through MELAJU, the UK-Indonesia infrastructure partnership, the UK supports the transition to a low-carbon and integrated urban mobility system.

Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Daop 6 Yogyakarta received a visit from His Majesty’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Dominic Jermey CVO OBE, accompanied by Gusti Kanjeng Ratu (GKR) Mangkubumi as a representative of the Keraton Yogyakarta Hadiningrat at Yogyakarta Station on Wednesday.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Dominic Jermey CVO OBE, who was received by EVP of KAI Daop 6 Bambang Respationo, expressed appreciation to KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta for the advancements in services and the spirit of innovation based on environmental sustainability.

According to him, the purpose of his visit was to strengthen collaboration between the UK and Yogyakarta, from climate action to education, as part of the UK-Indonesia Strategic Partnership launched earlier this year by President Prabowo and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

“In Yogyakarta, the UK-Indonesia Strategic Partnership has shown tangible results. Through MELAJU, the UK-Indonesia infrastructure partnership, the UK supports the transition to a low-carbon and integrated urban mobility system,” he said.

“Beyond low-carbon mobility, we also support climate resilience efforts and community-based initiatives, from circular waste management in Bantul Regency to social forestry and ecotourism in Kulon Progo,” he said.

The principle of inclusivity, he said, is at the core of the approach, including gender-responsive climate action and ensuring that the transport system serves all segments of society.

EVP of KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta Bambang Respationo had the opportunity to accompany the British Ambassador in directly inspecting the service atmosphere and facilities at Yogyakarta Station, such as the “Face Recognition” system, passenger waiting rooms, “passenger crossing”, and departure platforms.

“Services that prioritise customer convenience, inclusivity, and environmental friendliness and sustainability are one of the spirits of KAI in carrying out various innovations and service improvements,” he said.

According to him, this also supports the government’s strategic programme targeting the achievement of “Net Zero Emission” or net zero clean emissions by 2060 or earlier. This environmental sustainability will also become one of the important foundations in the future planning for the redevelopment of Yogyakarta Station.

“The redevelopment plan for Yogyakarta Station will not only increase capacity but also facilitate multimodal integration to enhance passenger safety and comfort,” he said.

“This redevelopment plan certainly also embraces the spirit of environmental sustainability and supports the preservation of Yogyakarta’s cultural values and local wisdom,” he said.

Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta Feni Novida Saragih stated that various efforts to improve sustainable and environmentally friendly services have been carried out by KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta in recent years.

The “boarding face recognition” system can reduce paper usage, the “water station” facility providing free drinking water for customers also reduces the use of single-use plastic bottles, umbrella drying machines to reduce plastic use, and various other environmentally friendly innovations.

The “Carbon Footprint” feature in the Access by KAI app allows passengers to view and calculate the estimated carbon emissions produced during train journeys.

“Various efforts to improve inclusive, integrated, environmentally friendly, and sustainable services will continue to be provided by KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, and this certainly requires support from all parties, including train passengers,” she said.
