Britain's Fryatt shines in Indonesia Open
JAKARTA (JP): Little-known Briton Edward Fryatt stole the
thunder at the Indonesia Open golf championship yesterday after
shooting nine birdies for a 65 to produce a new course record at
the par-71 Jagorawi Golf and Country Club.
Fryatt, who together with 21 groups had to abandon the play on
Thursday due to persistent rain, resumed the round early
yesterday and collected a 67 (33, 34) for a two-round score of
132.
Taking only a short break before the second round, 24-year-old
Fryatt, who renounced his amateur status on October 1994, fired
five sizzling birdies against a bogey in the first nine.
Back to the clubhouse, the Briton, who had lived in the United
States for the last 16 months and never took part in the European
Tour, shot four birdies and two deficit shots for another
impressive score of 2-under par-33.
"I was playing well at the time. But I was lucky enough to
keep the round going on," he said.
Four strokes behind the leader for second place was overnight
co-leader Australian Anthony Painter after firing four birdies
against three bogeys for a poor 1-under par-70. Painter carded a
66 together with fellow countryman Craig Mann in the shortened
first day round on Thursday.
Playing 23 holes in a day, five holes for the delayed first
round and another 18 holes yesterday "had made me very tired",
Painter complained.
Jorge Berendt of Argentine was third with a total four-under
par-137. He completed his first round yesterday with 3-under par-
68.
Berendt came out with a birdie in the first nine and came home
with two birdies and a bogey in the back nine of his second
round.
Indonesia's best hope Maan Naasim, formerly a Jagorawi pro
golfer who has played for Indonesia in many international events
including the Dunhill Cup, placed himself among the best 10 after
carding a 140 (72 68).
Rain yesterday again hampered the play as some 30 groups were
forced to abandon the course due the wet layout. (05)
