Britain to Host International Summit on Strait of Hormuz
London (ANTARA) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Wednesday (1/4) that his country will host an international summit this week on restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a morning press conference, Starmer stated that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will host the meeting of international leaders as part of efforts to address the worsening economic impacts resulting from the conflict in the Middle East.
He said Britain will not be drawn into the conflict and emphasised that the best way to tackle the rising cost of living is by promoting de-escalation and ensuring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“To that end, we are exploring every available diplomatic avenue,” he said.
Starmer also warned of the economic pressures arising from the situation, stating that the outlook will depend on how long the conflict lasts and how quickly the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (31/3) that he is “not fully” ready to withdraw US military support in efforts to force Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil and fuel flows, while urging his allies to take on a greater role.
