Britain Ready to Wage War on Russia? Ex-UK General: Funds Insufficient for New Weapon Procurement

Britain is confronting a paradox in its efforts to strengthen its military. On one hand, London is pushing for enhanced combat readiness and building new strength in Europe. On the other hand, budgetary limitations are the primary obstacle to defence modernisation.

Former head of Britain’s Joint Forces Command, Richard Barrons, states that the British armed forces lack sufficient funds for procuring new weapons systems until 2030.

According to him, these limitations encompass basic needs such as tanks, helicopters, and artillery, as well as modern technologies like kamikaze drones and AI-based systems. This situation is assessed to be eroding the domestic defence industry base and encouraging the relocation of production abroad, as reported by Sputnik.

Amid these constraints, Britain is accelerating strategic steps by forming a new maritime force with Northern and Baltic European countries through the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) framework.

The head of the Royal Navy, Gwyn Jenkins, states that the ten JEF member countries have signed a statement of intent to build an integrated maritime force that will complement NATO’s role.

This force is planned to be under London’s command and targeted to be fully operational by 2029. Jenkins emphasises that the troops will not only train together but also be prepared to ‘fight immediately if necessary’ with integrated operational plans.

This step is taken amid rising tensions in the European region. Britain claims that Russian military activities in European waters have increased by nearly a third in the last two years.

However, Moscow denies these accusations. Russia’s Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, asserts that his country has no plans to attack NATO and will only respond if attacked first.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that the narrative of the Russian threat is often used by the West to divert attention from domestic issues.
