Bring debtors in line

Bring debtors in line

From Bisnis Indonesia

I was drawn to offer my own suggestions after reading the
opinion of Hartoyo Wignyowijoto in 'Disclose the names of the 228
borrowing companies' in Bisnis Indonesia on Feb. 3, 1998.

It is a fact that the impact on the public exerted by these
companies in debt is much worse than that brought about by the
liquidation of the 16 commercial banks, yet no action has been
taken against them yet.

Although the banks have been liquidated, the debtors seem to
have remained calm. After all, it is the government which has
been doing everything to save them, and it is the public which
has suffered from this crisis.

I believe the government should:

1. Announce the names of the 228 debtors and disclose the
amount of their debts.

2. Each of these companies must be subject to inquiry to find
out how they have used their loans.

3. Companies not using loans for the productive sector must be
liquidated.

4. Any foreign exchange deposited abroad must be returned and
used to repay the debts.
