The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is encouraging the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology in the agricultural sector to accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions whilst simultaneously increasing productivity and food security. Puji Lestari, Head of BRIN’s Agricultural and Food Research Organisation, assessed in Sanur, Bali, on Wednesday that digital technology is considered one of the important solutions in supporting the transformation of the agricultural sector towards a more efficient and low-emission food production system. “Various innovations are currently available to help farmers reduce emissions while increasing farming productivity,” Puji said during a knowledge exchange event on Advanced Technologies for Low-Emission Rice and Livestock Systems FSIP-FOLUR - the Second Global Dialogue on Sustainable Rice Transformation in Sanur, Bali. Several technologies that are beginning to develop include intermittent irrigation methods for rice paddies, improved efficiency in fertiliser use, the utilisation of superior varieties, remote sensing technology, and emission monitoring systems based on artificial intelligence (AI). Puji explained that digital technology can also support a more accurate and easily implemented Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system for emissions, including by small-scale farmers. However, she cautioned that the successful implementation of technology depends not only on the availability of innovations, but also on investment support, adaptation to local conditions, and policies capable of expanding the application of technology from the pilot stage to a larger scale. According to her, one of the main challenges at present is the still limited knowledge and capacity of farmers in accessing and utilising the available technology. Through the forum, BRIN is encouraging collaboration between Asian and African countries to share experiences in implementing low-emission agricultural technology, including the development of digital systems that support the achievement of global climate targets. Puji asserted that technological innovation must be able to reach farmers directly so that the transformation towards low-emission agriculture can proceed more quickly and provide tangible benefits for food security and community welfare.
