BRIN Urges ADPIKI to Safeguard Integrity and Image of Indonesian Research
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is encouraging professional academic associations to actively safeguard Indonesia’s scientific reputation on the international stage. BRIN has invited the Association of Communication Science Lecturers and Researchers (ADPIKI) to play a role in strengthening research integrity to anticipate fictitious research practices.
This message was delivered by BRIN’s Deputy for Research and Innovation Facilitation, Prof. Dr. Eng. Agus Haryono, during an ADPIKI Research Corner webinar entitled ‘Socialisation of BRIN Research Grants’ on Friday (12/6/2026). Agus explained that the appeal responds to widespread discussion regarding alleged fake research on pneumonia at the International Society of Pneumonia and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD) 2026 forum in Copenhagen, Denmark, in mid-May. He noted that so far, no domestic lecturer or researcher association has issued an official response or institutional reaction to the issue.
‘Until now, no lecturer or researcher association has reacted to negative matters that could damage the image of lecturers and researchers,’ Agus said. In addition to urging ADPIKI to safeguard the research world’s image, BRIN proposed strengthening the position of researchers within higher education institutions. Agus expressed hope that ADPIKI could initiate the establishment of a functional researcher staffing scheme at universities, adopting the system used in government organisations. This scheme would allow academics to focus on research without losing the opportunity to continue teaching.
During the occasion, BRIN also socialised the Riset dan Inovasi untuk Indonesia Maju (RIIM) Kompetisi funding scheme, which is accessible to lecturers and researchers. This grant is provided to both government and non-government institutions to support the pursuit of scientific novelty that yields inventions and innovations. The research topics covered are broad, encompassing food, energy, health, water, strategic industries, social resilience, society, space, and nuclear fields. Agus added that each applicant is limited to submitting a maximum of three proposals, with key performance indicators requiring publication in reputable international journals of at least Q3 ranking.
The proposal submission process will officially open throughout July, from 1 to 31 July 2026. Subsequently, the stages will proceed with administrative selection, substantive review, and budget plan assessment scheduled from August to November, before concluding with the issuance of the decree on recipients in December 2026. In addition to RIIM Kompetisi, BRIN is also opening a Start-Up grant scheme worth Rp600 million to Rp700 million with a two-year incubation period. To ensure programme accountability, BRIN offers ADPIKI members the opportunity to participate as proposal reviewers.
ADPIKI Chairperson Dr. Heri Budianto welcomed BRIN’s invitation to involve lecturers and researchers as reviewers, particularly to strengthen the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Television cluster. Heri affirmed that over the past two months, ADPIKI has remained committed to building collaboration with BRIN to enhance its members’ capacity through educational activities such as webinars. ‘Previously, research funding for communication science lecturers was predominantly sourced from Dikti grants. With this collaboration, communication science lecturers and researchers now have an alternative to focus on accessing research grants from BRIN,’ Heri concluded.
