BRIN to study low-cost drug detection tools and vulnerabilities in vape use
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will study the development of affordable drug detection tools and the vulnerabilities in electronic cigarette or vape usage that could lead to drug abuse.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, the Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, stated that this study is part of strengthening research and innovation to prevent drug abuse and protect the younger generation.
“We have been tasked with strengthening research and innovation related to efforts to save future generations. This includes how to strengthen and improve the quality and increase the number of rehabilitation centres,” said Arif following a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto.
According to him, BRIN has also been requested to conduct studies on detecting drug use as part of prevention efforts that do not place a heavy burden on the national budget.
Furthermore, BRIN will examine the use of vapes, their impact on health, and the loopholes through which they might be utilised for drug abuse.
Arif noted that the number of vape users has now reached over four million people. Based on testing conducted by BRIN, he stated that vape use also has significant health implications.
“Medically, from tests conducted by BRIN, vaping impacts health regarding diabetes, lung issues, and pancreas problems,” he said.
Arif added that vapes could serve as a loophole for drug distribution, necessitating urgent anticipation.
“However, vapes can also become a loophole that could be exploited for the spread of drugs. Therefore, this is something that must be urgently anticipated,” he remarked.
In relation to this, BRIN will coordinate with the Ministry of Health, the National Narcotics Board (BNN), the Ministry of Law, and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to review relevant regulations.
According to Arif, the study will be supported by research findings and academic papers to serve as a basis for policy formulation.
During the limited meeting, President Prabowo also emphasised the strengthening of drug abuse prevention and the improvement of the quality of rehabilitation centres.
“The essence is that the President wants to save future generations, so he wants to ensure that the next generation is truly safe from drugs,” said Arif.
