BRIN: The Gap Between Research Results and Needs is the Greatest Challenge
The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, believes that one of the greatest challenges still facing Indonesia is the gap between research results and user requirements. Speaking in Makassar on Monday, Arif Satria noted that thousands of research papers are produced every year by various universities and research institutions. However, the primary challenge is no longer the production of research itself, but ensuring that these findings can address societal needs, create economic added value, and contribute tangibly to national and regional development. Currently, research has not yet achieved optimal social impact because it has not reached the stages of implementation and downstreaming. “Good research is not merely that which is published, but that which is capable of solving real problems, creating economic added value, and improving public welfare,” he explained during the BRIN Goes to Campus event at Hasanuddin University (Unhas). According to him, regional development should no longer rely solely on the exploitation of natural resources, but must be supported by the strengthening of research and innovation capacity. As the primary driver of the national research and innovation ecosystem, BRIN continues to encourage the improvement of research quality, the acceleration of research downstreaming, and the strengthening of multi-stakeholder collaboration. These efforts are directed towards ensuring that investments in research and development can provide broader benefits for both national and regional development. Therefore, strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem is a strategic agenda that will determine Indonesia’s future competitiveness. Collaboration between universities, the government, industry, and research institutions is key to accelerating this transformation. Strong synergy is required so that research results do not end as scientific publications, but are able to serve as solutions that address various development challenges and societal needs.
