BRIN Strengthens Sports Science with Artificial Intelligence
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is strengthening the utilisation of sports science in national sports development, including through artificial intelligence (AI) to support strategy and athlete performance.
Deputy for Human Resources in Science and Technology at BRIN, Edy Giri Rachman Putra, stated that advances in science and technology can reinforce various supporting aspects needed by athletes to achieve world-class performance.
"It turns out that it is not only talent that must be strengthened, but also the supporting system. One of them is perhaps the athlete’s nutrition, how their supplements and meals are managed, it is all science," said Edy at the Road to Talent Fest 2026 for Sports at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas in Jakarta on Thursday.
Beyond nutritional aspects, he noted that the application of technology can extend to the development of sports equipment and the formulation of athlete strategies in training and competition.
"Then the sports equipment, and also the strategy, that will certainly also involve science and technology using AI and so on," he said.
This collaboration is also in line with the efforts of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to integrate sports science into the development of athletes from a young age to the elite level.
Deputy for Sports Achievement Improvement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Surono, said the ministry is partnering with universities in the development of sports science and opening up space for cooperation with BRIN.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports is also synchronising the National Talent Management (MTN) programme with the Grand Design for National Sports (DBON) in the aspects of development, competition, improving the quality of sports personnel, facilities and infrastructure, as well as data.
Meanwhile, Deputy for Human Development and Culture at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Pungkas Bahjuri Ali, said the MTN is directed at producing outstanding talent who achieve at national and international levels. The programme covers sports, arts and culture, as well as research and innovation, as part of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
