BRIN strengthens Fishermen's Villages with solar power technology
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Arif Satria said the agency will strengthen the priority programme of the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village (KNMP) through solar-powered electricity technology.
“BRIN is committed to ensuring that this solar technology can directly touch the pulse of the grassroots economy, one of which is through the integration of supporting innovations in the Fishermen’s Village Programme,” the BRIN Head told ANTARA in Jakarta on Sunday.
Arif said BRIN has applied solar power to supply energy to Smart Feed Spreader technology in the aquaculture sector. By utilising solar energy, this feed-spreading system is able to operate automatically, efficiently, and fully controlled, without burdening fish farmers with electricity costs.
“This appropriate technology solution ensures that the drying process of fishermen’s catches takes place more quickly and hygienically, and is highly cost-efficient in terms of operational costs compared to conventional drying methods,” said Arif Satria.
It was previously known that President Prabowo Subianto has targeted 1,386 KNMP to be established and functioning by the end of December 2026, as an effort to improve the welfare of fishermen, while optimising Indonesia’s marine economic potential.
The villages are equipped with various facilities to support fishermen’s activities, ranging from ports, fish auction sites, cold storage rooms, workshops, marine product processing facilities, housing, to social facilities.
President Prabowo considers the development of Fishermen’s Villages to be an important part of making the sea a source of prosperity for Indonesian fishermen.
“Today, 100 Fishermen’s Villages have been built. Our target is for 1,386 Fishermen’s Villages to be established and functioning by the end of December 2026,” said President Prabowo in his state address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly and the Joint Session of the Regional Representative Council and the House of Representatives on 14 August 2026.
