BRIN researcher graduates with MSc from UGM at age 68, GPA 3.98

Age is no barrier to pursuing knowledge, as demonstrated by Djoko Slamet Pudjorahardjo, a researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), who completed a Master of Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) at the age of 68. Djoko, who is stationed at the Accelerator Technology Research Centre (PRTA) of BRIN’s Nuclear Energy Research Organisation (ORTN), officially earned a Master of Science in Physics Engineering after studying through the Master by Research (MBR) programme. He graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.98 in 1 year, 11 months and 29 days.

For his thesis, Djoko prepared ‘Analysis of Multicusp Ion Source Design for a 30 MeV Cyclotron’. This topic closely relates to his BRIN role focusing on accelerator technology or particle accelerators. He was conferred in the postgraduate ceremony held 22-23 April 2026 at Grha Sabha Pramana, UGM.

“I was motivated to continue my studies because I want to keep improving my competencies, supported by the Degree by Research programme from the institution where I work,” Djoko said after the graduation celebrations on Wednesday 20 May 2026.

Despite his extensive research experience, Djoko faced significant challenges during the course, particularly around adapting to information technology in a campus environment that advances very quickly. Some subjects required him to master programming languages and various specialised applications. Yet his adaptability spirit yielded a near-perfect grade.

For Djoko, the graduation carries deep emotional significance. Beyond personal achievement, this master’s degree is a special gift ahead of his retirement from the national research arena.

“Graduation is a great gift as I near retirement. It proves that, even at an age not considered young, I can still enhance my competencies through further study if I have the will,” he said.

At the end of the session, Djoko offered an inspirational message for young people not to give up on education. He emphasised that study should be conducted with seriousness and self-confidence.

“Acquiring knowledge is not limited by age, as long as we can still do it. Believe that we can complete our studies on time with consistent enthusiasm,” he concluded.
