BRIN prepares five flagship technologies to protect Pantura from tidal flooding
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is preparing five flagship technologies as concrete solutions to protect the North Coast of Java (Pantura) from the increasing threat of tidal flooding.
BRIN Head Arif Satria, in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, explained that the five technologies include modular multifunctional vertical seawalls and modular concrete blocks designed as coastal protectors that also offer added value, such as wave energy capture and transportation routes.
“Mastery of technology by the nation’s children can be the key to solving the tidal flood problem in Pantura while strengthening national technological independence,” he said.
Arif stated that BRIN is also developing breakwater protective layer units with an automatic interlocking system, which is considered more stable and efficient. These protective layer units have been implemented in 11 regions, with the latest development in Nusa Penida in 2025, following previous implementations in Pacitan, Sanur, Tuban, and Nias.
“So this is a form of technology that I think is very important because it has high stability, is more economical, and its production is simpler,” he continued.
Arif revealed that they are also introducing a sea current platform that allows seawalls and docks to function as independent energy generators.
“One of the advantages of this technology is that its domestic component content (TKDN) is more than 70 percent,” he said.
In response, Head of the North Java Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ) Didit Herdiawan Ashaf stated that President Prabowo Subianto has requested that the master plan for protecting the North Coast or Pantura of Java be prepared immediately.
Didit said that his agency is collaborating with various parties, such as related ministries and institutions, universities, and relevant experts, in preparing the master plan.
“For the technology, we are assisted by BRIN. With friends from BRIN, we have discussed for more than six months about the technologies to be used. There are those used from Indonesia itself, from within, as well as from abroad,” he said.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) emphasised the importance of an integrated approach in handling Pantura.
In particular, the Pantura of Java region has a significant contribution to the national economy, contributing around 27 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“Considering that around 55 million people live in 20 regencies and five cities in the Java Pantura region. Meanwhile, around 26 percent of the population lives in coastal areas. Therefore, this is an urgency that we hope will drive and mobilise everyone,” AHY said.
