Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is preparing early warning system (EWS) devices to anticipate flood and erosion disasters.

“What we are currently preparing is research on how to develop an early warning system for floods and erosion,” said BRIN Head Arif Satria in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Arif revealed that early warning system devices for floods are urgently needed, particularly in disaster mitigation efforts to prevent large numbers of casualties in the future.

“Until now, we have had no warning when floods and erosion suddenly strike, but going forward we can have an early warning system,” he said.

Arif explained that research on early warning system devices for floods and erosion commenced in 2026.

“Hopefully by the end of 2026 we will already have early warning system technology for floods and erosion,” said Arif Satria.

The early warning system devices for floods and erosion are among BRIN’s research projects that will eventually be handed over to communities in Sumatra.

In addition, BRIN is also deploying Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) drones to support reconstruction and evacuation processes.

This cutting-edge technology is capable of detecting objects up to 100 metres below the ground surface, enabling it to assist in the search for victims and mapping of soil conditions in landslide-prone areas.
