Examples of local foods high in micronutrients needed by children include chicken liver, which is not expensive but rich in vitamin A, iron, B12, copper, and selenium, BRIN public health and nutrition researcher Fitrah Ernawati said during a Jakarta discussion on Friday.

Fitrah explained that the same nutrients can be obtained from small fish, such as anchovies (teri) or bilis, for communities along coastal regions.

For vegetables, she added, people can use katuk leaves or substitute with kangkung (water spinach) and spinach, which are rich in vitamin C, iron, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus.

“By consuming a diverse range of foods, with varied proteins, vegetables, fruits, and from locally sourced foods, micronutrient density will increase and support improvements in nutritional status, which in turn can influence children's learning concentration,” said Fitrah Ernawati.

It is noted that the government will ensure the MBG programme continues during Ramadan and during holidays and long weekends with adjustments to the distribution mechanism in several regions.

The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) previously stated that MBG during Ramadan is adjusted to beneficiaries' needs, including providing takeaway meal packets for consumption at iftar.

In addition, BGN continues to improve the quality of menus and packaging to ensure food safety and meet national nutrition standards.

Evaluations conducted by BGN cover aspects of meal packaging, nutritional composition, and budget transparency, to ensure the programme runs in accordance with health standards and reaches the intended beneficiaries.
