A researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that the financial market would respond positively if the successor to Perry Warjiyo as Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) possesses a strong and independent track record. Syahrir Ika, a researcher at BRIN’s Centre for Economic Research, said the market response could include a strengthening of the rupiah, a reduction in risk premiums, and increased investor confidence. “If the successor has a strong and independent track record, the market can actually respond positively through a strengthening of the rupiah, a reduction in risk premiums, and increased investor confidence,” Syahrir said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday (27/7/2026).

On Monday morning, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced the resignation of Perry Warjiyo as Governor of Bank Indonesia. Syahrir said the new Governor of BI will face challenges including maintaining rupiah stability, controlling inflation, strengthening capital flows, increasing productivity, and encouraging quality economic growth. “All of this requires synergy between monetary, fiscal, and real sector policies. Therefore, the change of BI leadership is just one factor, not the main determining factor,” said Syahrir, who is also Chairman of the Indonesian Researchers Association (PPI).

Syahrir further stated that the opportunity presented by a new BI Governor lies in the possibility of a more adaptive policy approach to new challenges. This includes strengthening rupiah exchange rate stabilisation, deepening domestic financial markets to reduce dependence on foreign capital, accelerating the transformation of digital payment systems, and strengthening policy coordination with the government to support economic growth without sacrificing price stability. “My conclusion is that optimism for the Indonesian economy is not placed solely on a change of figure, but on the new BI Governor’s ability to maintain policy credibility,” Syahrir said. In a modern economy, he added, the market values policy continuity more than just a change of leadership. “If the new leader can bring innovation without reducing Bank Indonesia’s independence, then this change can actually become a momentum to strengthen market confidence while improving Indonesia’s economic fundamentals,” he said.
