Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has launched the 2025 Regional Competitiveness Index (IDSD) as a data-driven strategic instrument to strengthen the role of regions in underpinning productive and inclusive national competitiveness.

BRIN Head Arif Satria, speaking at the IDSD 2025 launch event in Jakarta on Tuesday, said the index was designed as a comprehensible indicator to bolster the competitiveness of each region, which ultimately contributes to strengthening national competitiveness.

“This is why BRIN is endeavouring to carry out this measurement effort, as one of BRIN’s duties is to conduct index measurements for various development metrics,” he said.

Arif emphasised that the index is not merely a platform for showcasing achievements, but also serves as material for strengthening the capacity of each region so that targeted interventions can be made in their respective fields.

According to Arif, current conditions confront humanity with the phenomenon of rapid change, where technology changes faster than individuals, individuals change faster than businesses, and businesses change faster than public policy.

He therefore stressed that this represents a challenge that must be met with a well-considered strategy, so that Indonesia can capitalise on the various opportunities arising from the pace of change.

“BRIN has the task of projecting what future technological developments will look like. We must project future technology from now, so that with projections for 2030, 2035 and 2040, we can work backwards to determine what research frameworks need to be prepared,” he explained.

He consequently urged all local governments across Indonesia to use the IDSD 2025 as a reference for policy implementation, so that equitable development across the entire nation can be realised, particularly in anticipation of Golden Indonesia 2045.

“The growth of research and innovation will become a strength for Indonesia going forward, as Indonesia will become one of the world’s four largest economies by 2050. There is no other way than through the strength of capital and the strength of innovation. Hopefully with this index, regions will be increasingly motivated to continuously improve their scores through various general development policy measures, and BRIN through BRIDA (Regional Research and Innovation Agencies), God willing, stands ready to strengthen the regional research and innovation ecosystem,” said BRIN Head Arif Satria.
