BRIN highlights the importance of reflecting on development through book launch
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has reminded of the importance of reflecting on the direction of national development to anticipate social crises in the country through the launch of a book titled “Approaching Natural Resources for Sustainable Development in Indonesia: Confronting the Socio-Ecological Crisis”.
Head of the BRIN Centre for Society and Culture Research, Aulia Hadi, in Jakarta on Thursday, emphasised that amid the dynamics of natural conditions in various regions of Indonesia, reflection on the direction of development has become a crucial step.
This is important to ensure that national development strategies remain relevant and able to meet society’s needs in a sustainable manner.
He mentioned that various current natural phenomena serve as important reminders of the need to maintain a balance in the relationship between humans and the environment to avoid greater impacts.
“It is important for development to always consider ecological limits,” he said.
Furthermore, Acting Head of the BRIN Social Sciences and Humanities Research Organisation, Muhammad Najib Azca, explained that the book adopts the sustainable development paradigm (Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs), emphasising the interconnectedness between ecological, economic, social, as well as political and policy aspects.
He underlined that the book successfully highlights the main challenge of development, namely how to achieve economic growth while still maintaining environmental carrying capacity.
“This is where the importance of a more integrated approach lies, because sustainability issues cannot be resolved sectorally,” he stated.
He added that the presence of this book is hoped to encourage collective steps across sectors to build a more resilient, fair, and sustainable Indonesia, in order to maintain stability from various dynamic challenges.
The book, which is the work of a BRIN research team, is expected to become one of the important references in understanding socio-ecological crisis issues while formulating more integrated and sustainable policy directions, particularly in the context of natural resource management, coastal areas, and small islands in Indonesia.
