BRIN: Food Variety Developed by UMI Makassar Researchers Represents a Breakthrough

The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, stated that the development of new plant varieties by researchers from the Muslim University of Indonesia (UMI) Makassar represents a breakthrough for enhancing national food independence. Speaking in Makassar on Monday, Arif Satria noted that in the current era of climate change, there is a pressing need for plant varieties capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions.

He explained that the increasing emergence of new variety research is vital, and BRIN will strive to facilitate the development of these varieties to strengthen national food security. However, he emphasised that the most critical factor is not merely producing new varieties, but ensuring they can be effectively applied in the field.

“This is a breakthrough that we must continue to pursue, as we must constantly strengthen these varieties to increase our food independence. However, the most important thing is that they can be applied in the field,” he said.

In his remarks during the international event, the Rector of UMI, Prof. Dr Hambali Thalib, stated that as of 4 June 2024, UMI has submitted 85 patent applications, with 45 patents granted, 511 registered copyrights, and two registered trademarks. Additionally, one plant variety protection is currently entering the variety release stage.
