BRIN Expert: Success in AI Development Must Be Measured by Utility

Prof. Dr. Ir. Hammam Riza, M.Sc., an expert in artificial intelligence and digital transformation at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), emphasised that success in national artificial intelligence (AI) development efforts should be measured by the technology’s utility to the public.

“Our measure of success in AI—whether we are ready for AI—must start not with how many publication papers we produce, but with how far that knowledge transforms into technological capability and provides benefits to society,” he stated during the “Medcom.id TECHPRESSO Agentic AI, Are We Ready?” discussion in West Jakarta on Thursday.

He noted that AI is an emerging technology that is evolving rapidly, meaning no country is truly fully prepared to face its advancements. BRIN is currently encouraging the development of AI technology so that Indonesia does not merely become a consumer market, but also a producer of solutions that deliver real impact to the community.

Furthermore, Hammam conveyed that national AI innovation efforts must be accompanied by enhancements in cybersecurity to prevent potential losses.

“Because the more AI we use, especially agentic AI, the greater the need will be for privacy, security, trusted identity, cryptography, and cyber security resilience,” he said.

Hammam expressed confidence that Indonesia can optimally capture the opportunities arising from AI development and play an active role in the global AI industry.
