BRIN develops lead-free solder paste formulation
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Bintang Adjiantoro, a researcher at the Metallurgy Research Centre (PRM) of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), has developed a solder paste formulation with joining performance equivalent to lead-based solder (SnPb), whilst also complying with global regulations that restrict the use of hazardous metals.
In a statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday, Bintang explained that the research is a continuation of previous studies. The shift towards lead-free solder has become a global trend because lead can pollute the environment and endanger human health.
“In our previous research, we succeeded in creating lead-free solder in rod and wire form. However, as technology has advanced, the use of solder in paste form has become increasingly widespread abroad, so we continued our research into paste form,” he said.
Bintang considers the development of lead-free (Pb) solder paste a strategic step towards promoting a safer, more environmentally friendly and more competitive electronics industry.
“The development of lead-free solder paste is part of efforts to provide electronic materials that meet international standards, whilst also supporting the domestic industry so that it does not depend on imported products,” he said.
Bintang explained that the research focuses on a lead-free alloy based on tin (Sn), silver (Ag) and copper (Cu), known as the Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloy, which offers good mechanical properties and joint reliability.
These parameters are the main determinants of the quality and reliability of electronic products, particularly in high-precision devices.
“The results of this research can be utilised by the electronics manufacturing industry, the automotive sector, and the ever-growing communications device industry,” Bintang said.
In addition to supporting environmental sustainability, Bintang hopes the innovation will strengthen the competitiveness of the national industry through the provision of high-performance solder materials that meet the needs of modern manufacturing.
