Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing fireless ready-to-eat food technology to support food services for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims.

BRIN Head Arif Satria stated in Jakarta on Thursday that this food technology is being developed at BRIN in various forms, such as canned food, flexible packaging, and fireless heating, with the latter currently the focus of BRIN’s development.

“This is indeed a technology that has been developed in our research company, namely food packaging technology. From canned food, flexible packaging including for saucy meat, to fireless heating technology. The last technology is what we will continue to develop going forward,” said Arif Satria.

Arif mentioned that the developed technology uses materials such as zeolite, lime, and others to heat food simply by adding cold water, without needing to heat the water.

The BRIN Head also said he has tasted the ready-to-eat food using this technology. According to him, the served food is sufficiently hot to enjoy.

“We will continue to develop this technology. Our main basis is food safety and food security. By ensuring it does not contain harmful substances, and supported by other technologies,” said Arif Satria.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan appreciated BRIN’s support for food technology, especially in food packaging to make it more durable before entering the distribution and trade stages.

Zulhas, as he is familiarly known, emphasised that the food sent is specifically for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims and not for circulation in Saudi Arabia.

He also assured the availability of food for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims is secure, despite global geopolitical dynamics.

“Regarding Hajj pilgrims’ consumption, the condition is safe. Even though there are geopolitical issues, pilgrims do not need to worry about food. Food is available at every mealtime, Insya Allah sufficiently complete and not lacking anything. Food is safe for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims,” said Coordinating Minister Zulkifli Hasan.
