BRIN Developing Innovation to Replace 3kg LPG, Claimed to be Twice as Cost-Effective

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is currently developing Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG) innovation, which is projected to serve as an alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for households.

The Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, stated that the technology, which utilises Metal Organic Framework (MOF), will provide an extremely high level of usage efficiency. “There will be a twofold efficiency, almost 1.5 to two times higher, and this will represent an energy revolution in Indonesia,” he said during the Energy Week 2026 event in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Arif provided an example where, if a household typically consumes one conventional 3kg gas cylinder within ten days, ANG technology could extend that duration to 20–25 days. This breakthrough, environmentally friendly innovation is being developed collaboratively with a renowned expert from Kyoto, Professor Susumu Kitagawa, through the establishment of a sister laboratory in Serpong, South Tangerang.

“We ask for your prayers so that by 2027, this innovation can be launched and subsequently distributed to the public,” said Arif.

According to the Head of BRIN, the development of this new gas energy source is part of BRIN’s intensive efforts to fulfil the mandate of national energy independence and sovereignty to match developed nations. He noted that strong innovation, a conducive ecosystem, and a framework connecting laboratories, universities, industry, government, and the community are essential for national energy transformation.

“The development of renewable energy is one of our important priorities, as we possess immense potential in solar, geothermal, wind, bioenergy, and various other clean energy sources,” added Arif Satria.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, assessed that the technology downstreaming steps led by BRIN and university researchers represent the most sensible and sustainable solution. “With strong research, superior talent, and industry involvement, God willing, Indonesia will be able to build energy independence, strengthen national industry, and progress towards becoming a developed nation,” said Brian Yuliarto.
