BRIN Coordinates with Palu City Government on AIDS Handling Research
Palu (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has coordinated with the Palu City Government in Central Sulawesi regarding a Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) study to examine the impact of human rights fulfilment in the handling of HIV/AIDS in the region.
“Together with the Indonesia AIDS Coalition (IAC), we want to find out how significant the impact of human rights fulfilment is in the handling of HIV/AIDS in Palu City,” said Fatwa Nurul Hakim, a researcher at BRIN’s Centre for Research on Social Welfare, Villages, and Connectivity, during a working visit to the Palu City Regional Secretariat on Wednesday.
He said the visit was an initial stage of coordination with the Palu City Government before field data collection begins.
He hopes the findings of the study can serve as a basis for formulating recommendations to improve service quality, while also reducing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
“The HRIA research is a collaboration between BRIN and the Indonesia AIDS Coalition with support from the Apik Foundation,” he said.
He said the researchers had received capacity building on HIV/AIDS issues from the Indonesia AIDS Coalition to strengthen their understanding of the social, health, and human rights aspects related to the research.
“The entire team has attended workshops held in Jakarta since early 2026 as part of aligning perceptions and developing the research methodology,” he said.
Palu Deputy Mayor Imelda Liliana Muhiddin said collaboration between regional governments, research institutions, civil society organisations, and all stakeholders is an important step towards producing policies based on data and community needs.
“The Palu City Government is opening the door for this research to be carried out, and its results are expected to serve as a reference in refining HIV/AIDS prevention programmes in the region,” she said.
Through research-based recommendations, she hopes that efforts to improve service quality, protect community rights, and eliminate stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS can continue to be realised sustainably in Palu City.
