BRIN Claims ANG Technology Could Save LPG Subsidies by Up to Rp26 Trillion Annually

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has claimed that its newly developed adsorbed natural gas (ANG) technology could reduce the government’s LPG subsidy burden by approximately Rp26 trillion per year. The statement was made by BRIN Chairman Arief Satria during a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto and 150 researchers at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, 6 August 2026. “Based on initial calculations, this technology has the potential to save up to around Rp26 trillion per year in LPG subsidy burdens,” Arif stated. He explained that the ANG innovation was developed through a sister lab collaboration with Susumu Kitagawa, the 2025 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. The technology allows compressed natural gas (CNG) to have a greater storage capacity compared to conventional methods. “Indonesia’s natural gas is very abundant, yet at the same time, we are dependent on LPG. Our LPG imports have been very large,” Arif noted. He elaborated that with ANG technology, a gas cylinder equivalent to a 3kg LPG canister can be used for a longer duration due to its enhanced storage capacity. “With the metal organic framework, we can now produce a significant breakthrough, namely ANG from CNG at 30 bar pressure with a larger storage volume,” he said. Arif added that a typical 3kg LPG cylinder lasting 10 days could last 15 days with the new technology, and research is ongoing to double this duration. President Prabowo has requested that the implementation of the ANG technology be accelerated to save foreign exchange and enhance national energy resilience by utilising abundant domestic natural gas reserves.
