BRIN: Biak Spaceport a Symbol of Space Ecosystem Independence

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Arif Satria has stated that if the spaceport in Biak, Papua Province, can be realised, the infrastructure will not only function as a satellite launch site but also become an important symbol signifying the independence of Indonesia’s space ecosystem. According to him, as one of BRIN’s strategic agendas, the construction of the spaceport in Biak is Indonesia’s gateway to safeguarding its sovereignty in outer space. “The spaceport is not just a launch location, but a primary symbol of the national space ecosystem that will strengthen Indonesia’s ability to provide satellite launch services from the territory of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia,” Arif Satria said during the celebration of 50 years of Indonesian satellites in Jakarta on Wednesday. The substantial costs involved could instead be used to develop more satellite innovations, thereby presenting more space-based solutions for the Indonesian people. Furthermore, the presence of this spaceport could also bring new economic opportunities as it can also be used as a launch site for other countries, particularly those with close ties to Indonesia. In addition to economic growth from providing launch services, supporting industries are also expected to grow with the establishment of Indonesia’s first spaceport. “The development of this spaceport will also encourage the growth of various supporting industries. Starting from manufacturing, advanced materials, avionics, telemetry, logistics, mission control systems, to various space-based economic services, which provide direct benefits to the people of Indonesia,” he added. Arif said both the local government and community representatives in Biak have welcomed the plan because they have a shared understanding that the spaceport will benefit the surrounding community. “We have discussed this matter with the local government and with community representatives in Biak. We have also spoken with traditional leaders. Alhamdulillah, some of these traditional leaders have also signed an agreement regarding the construction of this spaceport in Biak,” said Arif.
