Medan (ANTARA) - The Mobile Brigade Unit of the North Sumatra Regional Police conducted a sterilisation operation at several churches in Medan City, North Sumatra, to ensure the serenity of the Christian community in carrying out their Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship services.

“That activity is part of preventive measures and a demonstration of the Indonesian National Police’s readiness in anticipating various potential security disturbances during major religious moments,” said the Head of Team 1 of the Bomb Disposal Unit (Jibom) of the Brimob of North Sumatra Regional Police, Second Inspector Syariful Rahmi, in Medan on Friday.

Syariful stated that the team carried out the sterilisation, consisting of personnel from the Bomb Disposal Unit (Jibom) and the Hazardous Materials Unit (KBRN), to the worship locations to ensure that all areas were in a safe and sterile condition.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the churches involved included HKBP Sudirman, the Cathedral Church, Christ the King Church, GMI Gloria, H.M Joni Catholic Church, and GKPS Teladan.

“Every corner of the location was checked in detail, from indoor areas such as the pulpit, seats, and worship rooms, to outdoor areas like the grounds and parking lots,” he said.

He added that personnel used various modern tools, such as metal detectors, X-ray machines, and special equipment for neutralising explosives, to detect any potential threats, no matter how small.

“The results of the sterilisation activity showed that no suspicious objects or indications of dangerous materials, whether explosives or other hazardous chemicals, were found,” he stated.

The presence of Gegana personnel from the Brimob of North Sumatra Regional Police serves as concrete evidence of the Indonesian National Police’s commitment to providing a sense of security and maximum protection, especially during sacred moments such as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
