Brimob Officer Killed in Attack by Unknown Assailants in Yahukimo, Papua
A Brimob officer from the Papua Regional Police, Brigpol Fredi Lukas Awes, was found dead at the Jalan Pertanian Halabok Paradiso Belakang complex in Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands. Fredi is suspected to have been the victim of an attack by an unknown group on Monday (20/7/2026). The Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force discovered Fredi’s body in a tragic condition with multiple slash wounds from a sharp weapon. Deputy Head of Public Relations for the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force, AKBP Andri Alam, explained that Brigpol Fredi was a BKO personnel of the Cartenz Peace Operation 2026 Enforcement Task Force. He stated that since the body was found, the enforcement team of the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force has been searching for the perpetrators and the motive behind the attack. It is currently believed that Fredi’s death was the result of torture. ‘The late Brigpol Fredi Lukas Awes was found dead due to several sharp weapon wounds, allegedly inflicted by unknown persons. Officers are currently continuing the investigation to uncover the perpetrators and the motive behind this incident,’ AKBP Andri said via an official press release received by journalists in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7/2026). Fredi’s body has been laid to rest at a funeral home in Jayapura City, Papua. ‘We express our deepest condolences on the loss of one of the National Police’s finest personnel in the line of duty for the country,’ said Head of Cartenz Peace Operation, Inspector General Faizal Ramadhani. Prior to this incident, the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force reported that a special unit operation on Friday (17/7/2026) successfully neutralised three members of an armed separatist group in the Logpon KM-4 area of Dekai District, Yahukimo. Head of Public Relations for the Cartenz Peace Task Force, Commissioner Yusuf Sutedjo, stated at the time that the three separatists killed were Roni Kubis, Kumis Passae, and Orgenes Bayage. ‘The three were part of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) Kodap XVI Yahukimo, Yamue Battalion,’ said Commissioner Yusuf on Friday (17/7/2026).
