Brimob gunned down in brawl

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer was shot dead using his own rifle early on Thursday after he attempted to break up a brawl involving six local youths in Asiki district, Jayapura.

Irian Jaya provincial police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Moersitodarno identified the deceased officer as Second Brig. Dani Pamungkas.

Moersitodarno said police arrested two youths, identified as Theodorus Aitokok and Cosmos Kapeng, several hours after the shooting.

Dani's gun, an AK-47 rifle, was also recovered in the arrest.

Four other youths have also been identified as suspects but remain at large.

According to Moersitodarno, Dani had been posted near the site of the brawl when he heard about the fighting youths.

Arriving on the scene Dani grabbed one of the youths. But the others then turned on him.

Dani was mobbed and his AK-47 was snatched by one of the youths. In the tussle Dani was shot and died instantly, Antara reported.
