Brimob Engages in Shootout with Motorcycle Theft Suspects in Citra Raya, Tangerang
A chase ending in a shootout between police officers and a suspected motorcycle thief took place in the Citra Raya area, Panongan, Tangerang, Banten, on Friday (24/7) at midday.
Video footage circulating shows a plain-clothes officer pursuing two suspected motorcycle thieves attempting to flee after stealing a Honda Beat. The chase took place around Roundabout 3 in the Citra Raya area.
The shootout began with warning shots fired into the air by police. However, one of the suspects fought back by returning fire. The situation caused alarm among motorists, who halted their vehicles.
Head of Public Relations for Tangerang Police Resort (Polresta) Ipda Tri Leksono said the incident began when a Brimob officer from Polda Metro Jaya on patrol received information from security personnel about a motorcycle theft at a minimarket.
During a sweep, the Brimob officer spotted the reported missing motorcycle and attempted to stop its rider. However, the suspect resisted by firing shots at the officer.
The suspect managed to escape, but the stolen motorcycle was left at the scene and secured by police.
“The victim’s stolen motorcycle has been recovered,” he explained.
Tri confirmed there were no fatalities or injuries in the incident.
Tri added that police are still investigating to identify the perpetrator. Officers have questioned several witnesses and gathered evidence, including CCTV recordings from around the location.
In addition to securing the victim’s motorcycle, police are still searching for projectiles believed to have been fired by the suspect during the incident.
“Identification may come later from existing CCTV recordings and witness statements,” Tri explained.
Tri urged the public to remain vigilant amid a rise in vehicle thefts. Residents were also asked to report immediately via the 110 emergency line if they see anyone behaving suspiciously.
“If you see anyone acting suspiciously, report it immediately through the 110 call centre,” said Tri.
