Brigadier General Faizal, Director of Law Enforcement at the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps, stated that traffic accidents are events that are often unpredictable by humans and beyond our ability to avoid. However, fundamentally, such accidents can be prevented and minimised from various perspectives. “Traffic accident incidents are events that cannot be anticipated by every human and are beyond our capability to avoid them. But basically, accidents from such incidents can be prevented and minimised from various aspects and viewpoints,” said Faizal on Tuesday, 5 May 2026. This statement was made by the Director of Law Enforcement following the tragic accident at the level crossing at East Bekasi Station, which resulted in 16 deaths and dozens of injuries. Faizal explained that the accident at the level crossing in the East Bekasi area was partly due to the road facilities not being fully equipped with barriers and not fully guarded by railway personnel. According to Faizal, in responding to the incident, his side is not focusing on determining who is at fault or who should be held responsible for the accident at that level crossing. In his view, what is more important to underline is the significant impact caused, namely 16 fatalities and dozens of injured victims. Faizal also expressed deep empathy and condolences to the families of the victims left behind, hoping that similar incidents will not recur in the future. “In this position, we are not emphasising who is at fault and who should be responsible for the accident at that level crossing. But what we must underline from that incident is that it has resulted in 16 people dead and dozens others injured, and we certainly have great empathy for the families of the victims left behind,” said Faizal. Faizal stated that the legal process is currently underway. The National Police assures that the case handling is carried out transparently and objectively by involving various related parties. “Of course, the National Police is transparent and objective in handling this case; we have also involved all relevant stakeholders to work together to find clarity from this accident incident through scientific investigation, both from the human side (whether there is human error), vehicles, and the facilities involved that caused the accident, whether there is any malfunction that occurred,” said Faizal.
