Bridge Railings in Ancol Allegedly Stolen by Sawing, Less Than Half Remains
JAKARTA — Iron railings or barriers on a bridge in the Ancol area of Pademangan, North Jakarta, have allegedly been stolen by perpetrators using saws to cut through the metal.
The theft is believed to have been carried out in stages until most of the bridge’s metal barriers disappeared.
Saputra, 35, a security officer for a construction project near Jembatan Goyang Road, stated that the perpetrators, known as “iron termites,” allegedly cut the bridge railings first before removing the metal from its supports.
He said he has previously caught someone allegedly attempting to take metal from the bridge during patrols in the area.
“Personally, I’ve caught them twice. I even took evidence from them—there were two metal bars, if I remember correctly,” he said.
He recalled warning security guards at a residential complex near the bridge location because he suspected it served as a base for the iron termites’ activities.
“I told them, ‘If this happens again, it’s a police matter. There’s CCTV here.’ Since then, it hasn’t happened again,” he said.
Meanwhile, a local resident named Denny, 50, stated that the disappearance of the bridge’s metal barriers had been ongoing for quite some time.
According to him, despite residents still using the bridge for activities such as fishing or walking, the thieves remained undeterred in carrying out their thefts.
“People like that don’t worry even if someone is fishing here,” he told Kompas.com on Tuesday.
He noted that metal thefts from the bridge had not recurred since three metal thieves from a nearby location were arrested by police.
“Since they were arrested, nothing has been taken from the bridge. That means the perpetrators are not from far away,” he added.
Previously, it was reported that the railings or barriers on the bridge along Jembatan Goyang Road in Ancol, North Jakarta, were allegedly stolen by iron termites.
Based on Kompas.com’s observation at the location on Tuesday (10 March 2026), the bridge connects R.E. Martadinata Road with Lodan Raya Road. There are two orange barriers at the bridge access from R.E. Martadinata Road.
On the Lodan Raya Road side, the access is blocked by Tol Harbour Road II project barriers, leaving only a gap of approximately 10 metres. The bridge railings appear to have been largely removed by iron termites.
Now, the bridge railing, which is approximately 50 metres long, has less than half of its original condition remaining.
The missing sections of railing have left only the supports, or railing posts, which now appear corroded.
