The Banten Provincial Government is optimistic that the bridge over Sunda Strait will raise economic growth by between 2 and 8 percent.

The Banten Governor, Ratu Atut Chosiyah, said that the bridge would have an important role in improving economic growth in Banten and Lampung.

She explained that for Lampung, the bridge would increase its economy by between 4 and 11 percent.

“This will influence job opportunities in Java and Sumatra in general,” said Atut at the Finance Department, on Thursday (13/8).

The Lampung governor, Sjachroedin ZP, said that Lampung has been contributing 40 percent to the economic growth of Sumatra Island because Lampung connects Sumatra and Java.

However, he estimated that within the next 10 years, the Merak and Bakauheni harbors will be overwhelmed with the traffic between the two islands. “Therefore, it is important to have the bridge built,” he said.

Sjachroedin mentioned that 3,500 motor vehicles pass through Merak and Bakauheni harbors everyday carrying more than 25,000 passengers.
