Mataram – The Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) of Nusa Tenggara Barat Province is promoting the utilisation of leachate waste as alternative biogas energy through the development of research-based technology at Kebon Kongok landfill in West Lombok.

BRIDA NTB Head I Gede Putu Aryadi stated that his agency, together with the Rumah Energi Foundation and relevant stakeholders, has conducted research on leachate water development.

“The biogas is targeted for locations directly affected by landfill activities and to support educational, social, and religious facilities in the surrounding areas,” Aryadi said in Mataram on Monday.

In 2025, this cross-institutional collaborative research successfully created a prototype machine that processes leachate waste into biogas and organic liquid fertiliser.

The research results demonstrate that leachate waste, which has been synonymous with environmental pollution and pungent odours, has potential as an alternative energy source that can be utilised for household needs and other productive activities.

Kebon Kongok landfill, which receives waste from West Lombok and Mataram city, generates approximately 50 cubic metres of leachate daily.

Aryadi explained that this wastewater needs to be processed using appropriate technology to produce biogas capable of meeting energy requirements for dozens to hundreds of residents around Kebon Kongok landfill.

Beyond biogas for supporting productive economic activities, he added, the leachate generated from the research can also produce organic liquid fertiliser that can be utilised by farmers.

BRIDA NTB, together with the Rumah Energi Foundation and officials from Sukamakmur Village, held a discussion on the mechanism and technical aspects of biogas distribution from leachate to communities around Kebon Kongok landfill on 6 March 2026.

“The leachate research at Kebon Kongok landfill is currently the only one in Indonesia and will serve as a pilot for other regions,” Aryadi said.

BRIDA NTB and the research team will soon conduct location mapping and develop a network installation blueprint for biogas distribution points.

Village governments are being encouraged to prepare village regulations as the foundation for community management and utilisation of biogas, including involving Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) to ensure the programme operates sustainably.

“We urge village governments to conduct risk management, benefit analysis, and apply equity principles in the distribution of the biogas programme in the field,” Aryadi said.
