For Mahesa, a 12-year-old sixth-grade student at Barunawati Primary School in Semarang, walking to school has been a daily routine. Mahesa is accustomed to navigating coastal areas that are frequently flooded by tidal waters to reach his classroom.

His shoes, which have accompanied him for about a year, have begun to deteriorate due to constant use. Despite this, Mahesa remains spirited and enthusiastic about his studies. At school, he is known for his cheerful and active personality, never hesitating to ask questions when he encounters something he does not understand.

“Mahesa’s daily life is much like his peers. At school, he only spends two thousand rupiah on snacks. Despite his modest means, he is bright, cheerful, and active. He is very enthusiastic about learning and always asks questions when he is unsure,” said Wagiyem, a teacher at Barunawati Primary School, on Monday.

Amidst his daily life as a student, Mahesa held a simple wish: to have his own bicycle so he would no longer have to walk to school. This wish was finally realised through the support of BRI Peduli. Mahesa received a bicycle to support his daily commute. In addition to the bicycle, students at Barunawati Primary School also received books, bags, stationery, and shoes.

Assistance was also extended to teachers and school staff in the form of basic food packages. The school welcomed the support provided by BRI Peduli, noting that the benefits were felt not only by Mahesa but by the entire school community.

“On behalf of Barunawati Primary School Semarang, we express our gratitude to BRI Peduli for providing facilities for the children, including books, bags, and shoes, and even a bicycle. Furthermore, the teachers are grateful for the basic food packages, which are very helpful,” said Wagiyem.

Upon learning he had received a bicycle, Mahesa expressed his shock and joy. “I am very shocked; I didn’t expect to get a bicycle. I am happy and proud. Alhamdulillah, I have wanted my own bike for a long time. Now, I can ride to school and no longer have to walk,” said Mahesa.

The bicycle is now a new part of Mahesa’s journey to school. With a more convenient commute, he remains determined to study and pursue his dreams. “I want to be an Indonesian National Football Team player and an Indonesian astronaut. I love playing football, so I hope to join the National Team. I also want to be an astronaut so I can go to outer space,” he shared.

In a separate statement, BRI Corporate Secretary, Dhanny, revealed that BRI Peduli, as the umbrella for the Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme, continues to provide support to the community through various social activities, including meeting the educational needs of children. This support is part of an effort to accompany the younger generation in their learning and pursuit of their ambitions.

“We hope the assistance provided by BRI Peduli can help Mahesa maintain his spirit to continue learning and pursuing his dreams,” said Dhanny.
