BRI introduces QRIS Cross Border BRImo in China, making overseas transactions easier
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk continues to strengthen its role in providing cross-border digital payment solutions through the development of QRIS Cross Border BRImo, which can now be used in China. This step reflects BRI’s commitment to providing a seamless transaction experience for customers. This expansion aligns with the increasing mobility of Indonesians travelling abroad, including to China as a favourite post-pandemic destination, necessitating more practical and secure transaction solutions.
Through the QRIS Cross Border feature in BRImo, customers simply need to scan a QR code at local merchants in China to transact directly without the need to exchange physical cash. All payments are automatically converted from Rupiah balances using transparent, competitive, and real-time exchange rates. The implementation of QRIS Cross Border in China is also part of BRI’s support for Bank Indonesia in expanding the connectivity of cross-border payment systems. This is expected to increase the transaction efficiency of Indonesians abroad, strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global digital financial ecosystem, and encourage the creation of an increasingly integrated cross-border payment network.
BRI Director of Information Technology, Saladin Dharma Nugraha Effendi, stated that the development of QRIS Cross Border BRImo in China is part of BRI’s efforts to strengthen digital services to support customer needs when travelling abroad. “The presence of QRIS Cross Border BRImo in China has the potential to increase transactions by tourists abroad due to its ease of use. With this system, Indonesian tourists can shop directly at merchants in China that are integrated with QRIS. Moving forward, BRI will continue to drive digital service innovations relevant to community needs while expanding the acceptance of Indonesia’s digital payment systems at a global level,” said Saladin.
With QRIS Cross Border BRImo in China, Indonesian tourists can now transact more easily at various Chinese merchants without needing to carry cash or seek money changers. The transaction process becomes faster and more convenient through direct QR scanning, with a system that automatically deducts Rupiah balances and displays transaction details transparently in BRImo. In addition to providing convenience, this solution offers added value in terms of cost efficiency, as the competitive exchange rates are often more advantageous than physical currency exchange. This provides a more economical, practical, and controlled transaction experience for tourists during their travels.
Furthermore, every transaction made is recorded in real-time in BRImo, making it easier for customers to monitor their spending anytime and anywhere. In line with this, the adoption of BRI’s digital transaction services continues to show positive growth. As of the first quarter of 2026, BRI’s QRIS transaction volume reached IDR 30.5 trillion, representing a 76 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth, with the number of transactions reaching 253 billion, an 86.7 per cent increase YoY. Meanwhile, the transaction volume of the BRImo super app increased by 29.4 per cent YoY to IDR 2,042.2 trillion.
