RI deports shoe bomber suspect: Indonesian authorities have
deported a Pakistani citizen to Egypt in connection with
suspected terrorist activities including an alleged attempt last
month to bomb a U.S. airliner, a news report said Thursday.
Havis Muhammad Saad Iqbal was deported to Egypt at the request of
Egyptian authorities on Jan. 11, two days after being arrested in
Indonesia's capital for violating the country's immigration laws,
the daily Suara Pembaruan reported, quoting the chief of
Indonesia's intelligence service. --AP

Saddam says U.S. headed for "abyss": Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein, in a speech marking the 11th anniversary of the start of
the Gulf War, told the United States it is "sliding toward the
abyss" because of its excessive use of force since the Sept. 11
terror attacks. "America is on the loose, and this will be
fatal ... They are inevitably sliding toward the abyss," Saddam
said in the speech broadcast on state television Thursday. --AFP

British police net al-Qaeda suspects: British police made a wave
of anti-terrorist arrests on Thursday and charged a 37-year-old
Algerian with being a key member of al-Qaeda, the organization
suspected of masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks on America. A 30-
year-old Algerian was also charged with membership of al-Qaeda,
the group loyal to Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden. Both were
also charged with financing terrorism. --Reuters
