Brebes Police Declare 'Pocong Terror' Hoax as AI Manipulation

Brebes Police, Central Java Regional Police, have urged the public to remain calm yet vigilant regarding viral claims of fake ‘pocong’ figures on social media. Police confirmed the phenomenon is a hoax or AI-manipulated images.

Senior Public Relations Officer of Brebes Police, Iptu Indra Prasetyo, stated that analysis revealed most circulating ‘pocong’ content consists of AI-manipulated videos.

‘In Brebes Regency, no incidents matching the viral reports have been found. Much of the information is confirmed to be hoaxes or AI-edited videos,’ stated Indra on Tuesday (26 May 2026).

Brebes Police are encouraging residents to channel their concerns into positive action by reviving night patrols and community watch posts.

‘We urge residents to strengthen communication and cooperation, enhance night patrols, and show greater community vigilance. Additionally, we encourage more prayers and positive activities,’ added Indra.

Although the situation in Brebes Regency is confirmed safe and stable, the public is advised to remain prudent on social media and avoid spreading unverified information, including fake pocong claims.
