Brebes Parking Attendant Foils Rp3.6 Billion Theft
A female parking attendant in Brebes, Central Java, Kusriyati (65), has gone viral after successfully foiling the theft of Rp3.6 billion from a Pajero Sport vehicle. For her heroic actions, she received a Rp100,000 tip from the victim, which she then shared with her friends.
Kusriyati recounted that she initially saw someone smashing the car window. She immediately screamed upon realising the perpetrators were making off with a package from inside the vehicle. “I saw someone break the car window and then take a plastic package from inside. I immediately shouted, thief… thief!” Kusriyati said.
Due to Kusriyati’s shouts, residents gathered at the scene. The situation caused the perpetrator to panic and attempt to flee with the money. According to Kusriyati, the thief was dragged several metres while holding the package of money and trying to cling to a motorbike that was suddenly accelerated by his accomplice. The money was scattered on the road before being secured, while the perpetrators escaped by driving against the traffic flow heading west.
Following the incident, Kusriyati received a Rp100,000 reward from the victim, Kliwon Alwawan. She did not keep the money for herself but divided it equally among four people, including two fellow parking attendants and a motorcycle taxi driver, giving each Rp25,000. The mother of five explained that besides working as a parking attendant on Jalan Ahmad Yani, she also sells various drinks to supplement her family’s income after being widowed by her late husband, Darpin.
The attempted theft occurred on Monday around 3pm Western Indonesian Time. The victim, Kliwon, a resident of Kluwut Village, Bulakamba District, Brebes, explained that he had just withdrawn Rp3.6 billion from a bank. After leaving the bank, he became suspicious of several motorcyclists who were following his car. Feeling unsafe, he drove to another bank office nearby and deliberately parked in a crowded area to avoid crime. While he went inside the adjacent bank to check if the motorcyclists had left, one of the perpetrators smashed the window of his black Pajero Sport and took the plastic package containing the money. Upon hearing Kusriyati’s screams, Kliwon rushed to his car, finding the window smashed and his money scattered on the road. “I immediately checked and counted the money. Alhamdulillah, it was still intact, Rp3.6 billion, matching the amount I had withdrawn from the bank,” Kliwon stated.
