Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - United States President Donald Trump hinted that he would pivot to Cuba, the Caribbean island nation, after a war against Iran, with Cuba currently suffering a heavy blow from the US energy blockade.

“What is happening with Cuba is truly extraordinary,” Trump said during a visit to Inter Miami CF, Major League Soccer champions 2025, at the White House on Friday, 6 March 2026.

“We think we want to fix this one (Iran) first,” he added at an event where he met footballer Lionel Messi.

“But it’s only a matter of time before you and many others will return to Cuba,” he said.

The comments show that Trump, less than a week after escalating military clash in the Middle East, is weighing another major foreign policy move. Trump himself redirected his focus to Cuba after delivering a speech lionising war in Iran, where he said the US and Israel were continuing to ‘completely destroy the enemy’.

“We want you back, and we do not want to lose you. We do not want to make the situation too comfortable so they stay. But some people may want to stay. They are very fond of Cuba,” he said.

“That is another thing that should not happen,” he added.

He also praised Foreign Minister Marco Rubio as having ‘done a fantastic job’. Rubio, a Cuban-American whose parents emigrated in 1956.

“And you have done a fantastic job in a place called Cuba,” Trump added, receiving applause from the room.

Earlier, speculation about an attack on Cuba emerged after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham publicly named Cuba as the country likely to be the next focus after Iran. He said this in an interview on Fox News.

“Cuba next. They will follow in the footsteps of the communist dictatorship in Cuba. Their days are numbered,” Graham said.

In an interview with the US site Politico some time ago, Trump also referred to the fall of the Cuban regime, saying plainly ‘Cuba will fall’.

“We cut off all oil, all money, or we cut off everything coming from Venezuela, which is the only source. And they want to come to a deal,” he told Politico.

“We are talking to Cuba,” he claimed at the time.
