Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The rupiah exchange rate opened weaker against the US dollar on early trading this Monday (30/3/2026).

Referring to Refinitiv data, the rupiah started morning trading at Rp16,970/US, ora0.06 on Friday (27/3/2026).

Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY) at 09:00 WIB was observed strengthening slightly by 0.04% to 100.194.

The rupiah’s movement in early weekly trading is expected to remain heavily influenced by external sentiments, particularly the strengthening of the US dollar in global markets.

The US dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against six major world currencies, has now broken through the 100 level again. This rise indicates that the US dollar is once again being sought by investors, putting pressure on other countries’ currencies, including the rupiah.

The strengthening of the US dollar is occurring amid rising market concerns over the conflict in the Gulf region, which has the potential to last longer. This situation has driven sharp increases in oil prices and triggered new concerns about inflation surges and risks of global economic slowdown.

Markets are also still monitoring the latest developments from that conflict. US President Donald Trump stated that his country could take over Kharg Island, an island in the Persian Gulf that is one of Iran’s main oil export routes. However, at the same time, Trump also said the chances of achieving a ceasefire remain open.

This uncertainty is making market participants increasingly cautious. Moreover, the threat of inflation due to the surge in energy prices is starting to drive changes in expectations regarding the direction of global interest rates, including in the United States. Markets now see the Federal Reserve potentially maintaining high interest rates longer than previously anticipated.

Therefore, as long as the US dollar continues to strengthen and global uncertainty remains high, the room for rupiah appreciation tends to be limited.
