Breaking: Rupiah Opens Stable, US Dollar Holds at Rp16.885 Level
The Indonesian rupiah opened stably against the United States dollar on the final trading day of the week, Friday 13 March 2026, amid fluctuations in global dollar movements. According to Refinitiv data, the rupiah opened trading at Rp16.885/US$, matching the previous session’s closing position. On Thursday 12 March 2026, the rupiah closed weakened by 0.12% at that level. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index (DXY) at 09:00 WIB was recorded as weaker by 0.05% to 99.685. Nevertheless, in the previous trading session, the DXY had closed strengthened by 0.51% at 99.739. The rupiah’s movement today is estimated to remain influenced by US dollar dynamics in the global market, amid persistent geopolitical uncertainty, particularly regarding Middle East conflicts. In global markets, the US dollar remained strong and had the potential to register weekly gains for the second time since tensions between Iran and others intensified. Market volatility made the US dollar once again the primary safe-haven asset sought by investors. Rising oil prices also reinforced cautious sentiment in the market. At the same time, the United States permitted the sale of certain Russian oil products previously subject to sanctions relating to the conflict in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Iran has escalated attacks on oil facilities and transportation in the Middle East, amid statements from its highest leader asserting the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. These uncertain conditions have kept the US dollar in demand among market participants. As a result, the scope for appreciation of other currencies, including the rupiah, has become more limited.
