North Korea has once again heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula by launching several missiles towards waters off its west coast on Tuesday (26 May 2026). South Korean military officials stated that at least one of the launched missiles was a short-range ballistic missile.

This marks Pyongyang’s first publicly known missile launch since its 19 April test, during which North Korea claimed to have tested several short-range ballistic missiles armed with cluster bombs.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the latest missiles were launched around 13:00 local time from Chongju in North Pyongan Province, North Korea.

“North Korea fired multiple missiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile, towards waters off its west coast,” said the South Korean military, according to AFP.

No further details have been provided on the range or specific types of other missiles launched. However, the launch has sparked fresh regional concerns given North Korea’s ongoing enhancement of its strategic arsenal in recent years.

In early April, Pyongyang announced it had tested a new cluster warhead for ballistic missiles and electromagnetic weapons. Analysts view this as part of North Korea’s efforts to demonstrate its capability to engage in modern warfare.

The North Korean government stated that developing new weapons is part of enhancing national military readiness amid increasing international pressure.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un previously asserted that North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state is irreversible. In March, he described expanding its nuclear deterrent as crucial for national security.

“North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state cannot be changed, and expanding its ‘nuclear deterrent for self-defence’ is vital for national security,” Kim stated, according to state media.

Despite being under UN Security Council sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, North Korea has accelerated its military arsenal development under Kim Jong Un’s leadership.

Pyongyang’s actions have drawn sharp condemnation from South Korea, Japan, and the United States, which view North Korea’s missile programme as a threat to East Asian security stability.
