Breaking News! Trump Cancels Plans to Devastate Iran, Agrees to Ceasefire
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran on Tuesday (07/04/2026). This decision cancels the massive attack threats he had previously issued, just under two hours before the deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz expired.
Quoting Reuters, Trump stated that significant progress in communication between the two parties was the main reason for his willingness to postpone military action. He claimed to have received a peace proposal from the Iranian side that was deemed reasonable for further discussion.
“Iran has presented a 10-point proposal that serves as a workable basis for negotiations. I expect that agreement to be finalised and refined during this two-week window,” Trump said.
This announcement drew sharp attention because just hours earlier, Trump had issued a strong warning via social media. He threatened to destroy all of Iran’s civilian infrastructure if his demands were not met, stating that an entire civilisation would die that night. However, this stance completely changed when he confirmed that the ceasefire would apply reciprocally.
“This will be a two-sided ceasefire! The reason for doing it is that we have met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along towards a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” Trump wrote in his post on the Truth Social platform.
Trump added that this last-minute agreement heavily depends on Iran’s compliance in immediately halting the blockade of oil and gas supplies in the Strait of Hormuz. That route is crucial as it handles about one-fifth of the world’s total oil shipments.
In response to the latest White House stance, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi expressed his side’s readiness to ease tensions. He assured that the international shipping lane, which had been disrupted, would be reopened in accordance with the agreement.
“Tehran will halt retaliatory attacks and provide a safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz,” Araqchi said in an official statement quoting Reuters.
Although Trump has announced the ceasefire, the situation on the ground briefly heated up when the Israeli military reported detecting missiles launched from Iran towards their territory just minutes after the announcement. However, two White House officials confirmed that Israel ultimately agreed to follow Trump’s lead in implementing the two-week ceasefire and suspending their bombing campaign.
The Iranian side itself confirmed that follow-up talks would soon take place on Friday (10/04/2026) in Islamabad, Pakistan, with mediation from the local prime minister. Iranian state television even dubbed Trump’s move as an embarrassing retreat for the United States.
