US forces launched airstrikes on several military targets on Kharg Island, Iran, on Tuesday (07/04/2026). The strikes followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump of a very tight deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Citing a Reuters report, the additional strikes on military targets are claimed not to impact Iran’s oil infrastructure. This was stated by a US official speaking on condition of anonymity.

“At least some of the strikes targeted sites that had previously been attacked. The strikes occurred in the early hours of Tuesday,” the official said.

US Vice President JD Vance gave a separate statement while in Budapest, Hungary, regarding the strikes. Vance emphasised that the attack on Kharg Island does not represent a change in the US strategy towards Iran.

“We will strike some military targets on Kharg Island, and I am confident we have done so,” Vance said.

Vance added that the government under Trump’s leadership is confident of receiving a response from Iran before 8:00 p.m. local time or around 7:00 a.m. WIB on Wednesday. Currently, the White House is still pursuing negotiations to end the conflict.

“We will not strike energy targets and infrastructure until the Iranian side submits a proposal we can support or if they submit no proposal at all,” Vance said.

Vance also reiterated that the latest military action in the strategic area remains in line with directives from US President.

“I think the news from Kharg Island does not represent a change in strategy, or any change from the US President,” Vance stated.

The conflict between the two countries has intensified after President Donald Trump attacked Iran at the end of February to force Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions. This move was retaliated by Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical oil transit route and the lifeline of global energy.

Trump had previously issued harsh threats, stating that “the entire civilisation will die tonight” if Iran does not soon reach an agreement and end the blockade in the strait. Trump set a deadline until Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) for Iran to surrender to his demands or face total destruction of civil infrastructure, including bridges and power plants.

Despite being under military pressure and threats of economic destruction, Iran reportedly remains unmoved. The Iranian government firmly rejected the previous ceasefire proposal and did not approve Trump’s demand to open the Strait of Hormuz without the conditions they proposed themselves, namely a permanent cessation of hostilities and the lifting of sanctions.
