ISTANBUL — The Turkish Ministry of Defence, as quoted by TRT World, said on Wednesday (4 March 2026) that an Iranian ballistic missile bound for Turkey had been intercepted and shot down by NATO air defence systems. The missile was intercepted outside Turkish airspace as it traversed Iraqi and Syrian territory.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Defence, some debris from the interceptor’s fragments fell in the Dortyol district of Hatay Province. There were no casualties.

Ankara said that the nation’s intent and capability to safeguard national security remain at the highest level, while emphasising that Turkey is pushing for regional stability and peace. The Turkish government stressed that it is fully capable of defending its territory and protecting its citizens from external threats.

Turkish authorities warned that any unfriendly action would be met with a firm response and urged all parties to avoid steps that could widen the conflict. Turkey added that it would continue to consult with NATO and allied nations.

“We reiterate our warning to all parties to avoid steps that could escalate tensions in the region and lead to the spread of a broader conflict,” said Burhanettin Duran, the Turkish Head of Communications, in his official statement.
