Breaking news: Iran attacks US airbase

WASHINGTON — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated it has attacked a US airbase in response to early morning strikes by US forces on a site near Bandar Abbas airport in Iran.

In a statement published by semi-official news agency Tasnim, the IRGC announced that an airbase identified as the source of ‘American aggression’ — without specifying its location — was struck at 04:50 local time (01:20 GMT).

The announcement follows reports that the US military targeted an area on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas.

The IRGC emphasised that any aggression would not go unaddressed, stating ‘further military actions will face a firmer response’.

Recent tensions between Iran and the US have emerged amid fruitless negotiations. The US has demanded Iran dismantle its nuclear programme, but Tehran has rejected the request. A proposal to transfer Iranian uranium to a third country has been put forward, but the US has refused any transfer to Russia or Iran.

Previously, the IRGC Navy was reported to have confronted a US oil tanker attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz by disabling its radar systems.
